PROSTITUTION SHOULD BE LEGALIZE ?

December 6, 2019 My Elite Club
The oldest profession is rigorously recorded in the Bible depicting instances of prostitution by career professionals as well as prostitutes prompted by circumstance. Today, with over 40 million prostitutes worldwide and between one and two million prostitutes in the US alone, it’s not surprising that every country on the planet has laws governing it. Whether prostitution should be vigorously opposed or tacitly accepted is a subject of much debate, and it seems no one policy holds the monopoly on success or failure.
So, when it comes to prostitution, should we legalize it or keep it criminal? Here are both sides of this debate.

Keep it criminal

Legalizing prostitution has failed to check its illegal counterpart

When the Netherlands legalized prostitution in 1988, one of its main objectives was to curtail human trafficking and the criminal prostitution enterprise. In spite of best intentions, illegal brothels still proliferate and prostitutes continue to suffer abuses at the hands of pimps. Similarly, Nevada’s illegal prostitution industry is estimated to be about four times as large as its legal enterprise. If legalization does not in fact protect prostitutes, then it proves nothing more than a cynical revenue source for government.

It reinforces the darkest attitudes of capitalism, in which people are reduced to commodities

How does one quantify value for an hour of her time? How about for a pound of her flesh? Exchanging money for sexual interaction, an interaction which is commonly regarded as both an expression and vehicle of intimacy, reduces this bond-solidifying act to mere transaction. And while some buyers voice disillusionment with the services rendered, others draw extreme satisfaction from the leverage one gains from paying for sex, allowing them to “do things with [prostitutes] that real women would not put up with.” But, let’s not forget that prostitutes are as real as girlfriends and wives. The essence of this statement, which was taken as part of an international research project researching men who buy sex, shows just how effective sex-for-pay is at removing all traces of humanity from its practitioners.

Prostitution promotes degrading attitudes toward women, and invites violence against them

The fact that sex workers are 80% female cannot be overlooked, nor should the fact that a sizable portion of sex workers are coerced by physical means or by economic hardship. Female prostitutes are more likely to be raped or murdered than any other population. One former prostitute recalls the violence she withstood both as a trafficking victim and as an independent contractor, stating: “I’ve been shot five times, stabbed 13 times – I don’t know why those men attacked me, all I know is that society made it comfortable for them to do so.”

And so, by the necessity to protect themselves, either from physical harm or from destitution, an overwhelmingly female contingent of sex workers find themselves at the mercy of the men they serve. Cruelly, society blames women for the violence committed against them, often postulating how she might have brought the trouble on herself. Rape statistics in Nevada, where prostitution is legal in most counties, supports the notion that degradation of prostitutes translates to females writ large: rapes in Nevada are 25% higher than the national average. The only way to oppose such attitudes (and realities) is to increase legal measures against those who perpetuate the prostitution industry.

Legalize it

Legalization circumvents the most dangerous aspects of prostitution

Criminalization of prostitution leaves prostitutes on the fringes of society, making them vulnerable op to violence, poverty, and health risks. Decriminalization allows sex workers to call police in incidences of violence. In the Netherlands, decriminalizing prostitution gave sex workers access to social security and public health care.  India’s union of sex workers improved prostitutes’ financial security by teaching them how to identify counterfeit bills.

Sexually transmitted infections are also statistically lower in areas where prostitution is decriminalized. In rural Nevada, where prostitution is legal (and condoms and regular HIV tests mandatory), there has not been one case of HIV/AIDS diagnosed in a registered sex worker since 1986. Beyond all the practical benefits, legalizing prostitution brings sex workers into the fold of society, increasing their sense of belonging, thereby enhancing their feelings of responsibility toward others.

Legalization can harness the sex industry’s potential to contribute to society

One formerly illicit trade that is now legal, marijuana, has done wonders for economic and social rejuvenation in Colorado. In 2015, the state has grossed nearly $1 billion in pot revenues (approximately 15% of that became the state’s through taxation), most of which have been funneled into the state’s school system. At the city and county levels, Coloradans have used their share to ramp up public health initiatives and even to address homelessness kids. Imagine how different prostitution would seem if a portion of its proceeds went to providing child-care support for working parents, or to supplement medical research that helps to cure disease, or to help fund drug rehabilitation programs.

Legalization reflects the victimless nature of consensual prostitution

The internet abounds with sex worker testimonials who attest to the satisfaction of a career in sex, and these personalities carefully draw a distinction between themselves and those who are coerced. One prostitute marvels at her great financial success, and draws feelings of “empowerment” from her work. Stories of satisfied practitioners and customers beg the question: Why isn’t prostitution simply viewed as a normal business transaction? As the great variation in prostitution laws across the globe reflects, the illicit nature of prostitution is by no means an objective reality. And even if the ethical parameters of prostitution are unclear, free societies should, in principle, avoid restricting business transactions which do not harm individuals or society.

The Bottom Line: Prostitution is not a hegemonic practice. Because it comes in so many mediums, and is practiced by willing and unwilling parties, governments are unlikely to effectively address the ills (or the benefits) that accompany prostitution with one-size-fits-all policies – nor should they try. What do you think?

OPIOID EPIDEMIC

December 6, 2019 My Elite Club
By A. Santiago

The Opioid epidemic has spread to every group of people in the United States. The Opioid addiction crisis claims 115 American lives daily.

What Is the Opioid Epidemic?

Starting in the 1990s with the increase of prescription painkillers, the Opioid epidemic has become a modern health crisis. It has been likened to a plague due to the high number of overdose deaths left in its wake. When people talk about the opioid epidemic, they are referring to a variety of behaviors and events related to the abuse of prescription painkillers and/or Opium-derived illicit substances. The abuse of prescription Opioids (e.g. Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Heroin, and et cetera), hospitalizations, overdoses, and deaths are all aspects of the Opioid epidemic currently affecting the 2.1 million Americans with an Opioid addiction. An average of 115 Americans die each day from Opioid-related overdose.

What Are Opioids?

Opioids are a class of drugs that are chemically similar and act on Opioid receptors in the brain and nerve cells. They interact with the body to relieve pain and can create feelings of euphoria. Historically, Opioids were derived from the Opium Poppy and turned into medications like Codeine and Morphine. Today, semisynthetic and synthetic Opioid medications (which are still derived, at least to some degree, from the Opium Poppy) have caused even more damage because of their potency. For example, Carfentanil is an Opioid analog 5,000 times stronger than Heroin and 10,000 times stronger than Morphine. Contact with a few grains is toxic enough to be fatal.

Common Opioids include:

  • Hydrocodone (brand name Vicodin)
  • Oxycodone (brand name OxyContin, Percocet)
  • Morphine
  • Codeine
  • Fentanyl
  • Demerol
  • Tramadol
  • Dilaudid
  • Heroin
  • Methadone

How the Opioid Epidemic Started

“The First Wave”

The Opioid epidemic began in earnest in the 1990s when pharmaceutical corporations roundly assured the medical community of the safety of prescription Opioids as pain relievers. This period is described as the “first wave” of the Opioid epidemic. At the time, TV advertisements for medications increased to the point that patients could request prescriptions by name. Believing the threat of addiction to be low, doctors began prescribing painkillers in record numbers. By 2011, doctors were writing 238 million Opioid analgesic prescriptions annually. Yet, illegal street drugs and drug busts garnered more attention, leaving increasing numbers of Opioid overdose deaths underreported for a time.

“The Second Wave”

The second wave of the Opioid epidemic started in 2010 with a concurrent rise in Heroin deaths as prescription painkiller deaths continued to climb. That year, 16,651 people died from drug-induced overdose; Heroin was involved in 3,036 deaths. During this time, deaths from prescription Opioids overtook deaths from motor vehicle crashes, Cocaine, and Heroin combined. The rise in Heroin use, as an injection drug, also led to a rise in the spread of infectious diseases like HIV and Hepatitis C.

“The Third Wave”

The third wave of the Opioid epidemic started only three years later with deaths involving highly potent synthetic Opioids (like Fentanyl and Carfentanil). In 2016, nearly a third of all drug overdose deaths and half of all Opioid deaths involved a synthetic Opioid, up 100% from the previous year. 19,413 individuals died as a result of synthetic Opioids in 2016, more than any other drug. What’s worse, illegally manufactured derivatives synthetic Opioids are now often added to counterfeit pills (like Benzodiazepines) and other street drugs (Heroin, Cocaine, Marijuana) for added side effects and to increase addictiveness. This has also contributed to a rise in overdose deaths for those substances.

Opioid Epidemic Statistics

170 thousand In 2016, 170,000 people used Heroin for the first time.
504 billion dollars. The economic cost of the Opioid Epidemic is $504 billion a year. 40 percent About 40% of Opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription Opioid.

Who the Opioid Epidemic Affects

Specific populations, like teens and veterans, are experiencing troubling rates of addiction and overdose, yet no group is exempt from the effects of Opioid addiction. The rate of Opioid overdose death is 5 times higher in 2018 than it was in 1999. In that time, the abuse of Opioids has spread across every demographic in the US. In 2015, a third of the adult population used prescription pain relievers.

Today, individuals between the ages of 25 and 44 are seeing the largest increases in number of overdose deaths, especially males. Fringe metro and micropolitan areas see the highest rates of addiction and death. The states with highest rates of death fall mostly on the eastern side of the US – New Hampshire, West Virginia, Massachusetts, and Ohio.

Opioids are highly addictive because they not only reduce pain, but they also interact with the reward center of the brain by releasing dopamine or endorphins. Over time, the brain stops releasing these chemicals on its own. A person will then feel the need to take Opioids just to feel “normal.” This is known as an Opioid dependency. Studies have shown that repeated use of analgesics also affect the body’s ability to cope with pain. Thus, most people abuse prescription painkillers for the very reason they were prescribed (and not to get high).

Nonetheless, an Opioid addiction is likely to develop in those with prolonged use. Research revealed that among patients with a prescription lasting at least 8 days, 13.5% were still taking them the following year. The number still taking pills jumps to 30%  among those with a 30-day prescription. A number of people, once they’re unable to obtain a prescription, will then turn to an easily-available, cheaper alternative – Heroin. 80% of people with a Heroin addiction first abused an Opioid prescription. In 2016, there were more than 948,000 people using Heroin in the US. Heroin use has gone up among men, women, most age groups, and all income levels; and its overdose death rate has increased by 19.5%.

Additionally, Opioid addiction affects growing numbers of pregnant women (most had been using prescription Opioids prior to becoming pregnant). Opioids are dangerous to a fetus and can result in neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), or a group of health issues caused by exposure to Opioids in the womb. Babies born with NAS are addicted to Opioids and will go through withdrawal after birth.

Getting Help for an Opioid Addiction

An Opioid addiction can be one of the harshest addictions to recover from. Depending on the length and severity of the addiction, the body may have to make serious readjustments to function normally again. Once someone with an addiction stops taking Opioids, their body enters withdrawal. Opioid detox can be extremely painful and potentially fatal. Commonly, a detox center is recommended for those with chronic Opioid addictions to clear the body of substances.

To fight the Opioid epidemic, various government-funded treatment facilities provide care under the direction of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Therapy may include inpatient or outpatient rehab, medication-assisted therapies (e.g. Naltrexone, Methadone, and Buprenorphine), trauma-resolution therapy, or 12-step programs. Reach out to a treatment expert now to find a facility that fits your needs.
